Psychology Services
Psychological Services staff are dedicated to supporting and fostering confident, happy and engaged learners. They are part of the multi-disciplinary team of professionals available schools to help support students at risk. Through knowledge and practical skills, they develop supports to enhance student motivation, achievement and self-esteem.
School Psychology staff have knowledge of:
- Child and adolescent development
- Cognitive functioning
- Social-emotional development
- Behavioural problems in children and teens
- Assessment techniques
- Diagnostic criteria for learning and mental health disorders
- Evidence-based instructional and remedial techniques
- Mental health/behavioural interventions
- ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis)
What does this mean in your school? How do staff apply their knowledge base to support students, school staff and parents? Psychology staff:
- Provide psychological assessments and comprehensive reports
- Identify exceptional learners
- Make diagnoses when appropriate
- Develop recommendations for school and home
- Recommend further assessment and/or community supports as appropriate
- Plan behavioural interventions (Positive Behaviour Support Plans, Safety Plans, Safe Physical Intervention Plans)
- Provide consultation through multidisciplinary team meetings, classroom observation and parent meetings
- Participate on Crisis Intervention and Tragic Response Teams
- Offer Professional Development (staff meetings, PD days)
