We might have goals, but we also have distractions. We experience slumps. Our motivation dips. When things are hard, particularly right now, it can be easier to get side-tracked or quit. Persistence is what happens when we push through, keep focused, and stay the course. In order to get better at something, you have to keep showing up for yourself. Practise. Make revisions. We may not have the skill YET but our willingness to keep going is what will determine our success. The hard work that we put in now will pay off in the end.
Try this:
As a class, group or family:
- Challenge yourself to balance a ruler or yardstick on one finger; when it drops try again. Don’t give up until you have tried it at least ten times in a row.
- Play a game of Jenga with your friends/ family/class- see how tall you can make the tower together before it tips.
- Take a deck of cards and make a house by leaning the cards on one another. Don’t give up until you have tried it at least ten times in a row.
- Balance an egg vertically.
- Find a puzzle (100 pieces or more) and work on it together as a group, family or class.
Ask yourself, there is no wrong answer:
When you were trying these difficult tasks how many times did you want to give up?
What was distracting you or what could you do differently to achieve your goal?
What helped you want to stick with the goal, finish the task?
Connecting to our faith:
The Apostle Paul encouraged the church with this “And I am sure of this, that He Who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Phil 1:6
Dear God, we know that you can hear us when we pray. When there is something, we are asking for, help us not to give up but to keep on praying. We know that you love us and will answer our prayers in your time and in the way that is best for us. In Jesus’ name – Amen!
