The Christmas season reminds us of the most important gift of all, LOVE. Christmas is a celebration of God’s love for us and our love for each other.
The 5 Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman explores the ways that people give and receive love. This is applicable to our relationships with our children, spouses, family members, and friends. Each of us usually has a primary love language, and when we know what that is for ourselves and others, we are more likely to be successful when we share our love.
The love languages fall into 5 categories:
In today’s Wellness Wednesday, we are going to explore the different ways that people share LOVE.
Try this:
As a class, group, or family:
- Take the Love Language Quiz: www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/
- (NOTE: there is one each for children, teens, singles and couples)
- Create a “7 Days of Christmas Cheer” Love Calendar for the week with a daily activity to support each of the Love Languages.
- For example:
- Monday: Send an encouraging text or mail a heart-felt card (Words of Affirmation)
- Tuesday: Bake Christmas cookies with your child or teen (Quality Time)
- Wednesday: Shovel the snow for your neighbour (Acts of Service)
- Thursday: Give someone in your family (bubble) a warm hug (Physical Touch)
- Friday: Surprise your friend with a porch package drop off (Gifts)
- Saturday and Sunday: Repeat the Love Languages you like best with new activities!
Ask Yourself, there is no wrong answer
Does your primary love language seem correct to you?
How can you communicate to your loved ones differently now knowing their primary love language?
Connecting to our faith:
The greatest Commandment: Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:36-40)
“For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1.8-11)
What is love? Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
Let us pray: God of love. Help us to love with all our heart, soul, and mind in all that we do. Let our love be your light in this world. Amen.
